Scholarly Debate

There is this rather scholarly individual on the ImDb website that advocates that not only does the Bible sanction Polygamy but within the union it is lawful for a man’s wives of the poly union to be involved in lesbianism. Now when I heard this I was like what. I completely disagree with him. The problem is that he has done so much research and the work is so volumous that who has the time to look all of that stuff up to give a rational thought out argument. He claims that lesbianism is fine as long as it is sanctioned within a polygamous relationship, where one man and multiple women are involved. On the surface his points appear sound. However I’m sure that it can be proven otherwise unless of course the Jews manipulated the texts for their own self serving purposes.

I was initially going to hastily post the Quran’s position on the whole matter but when I read the verses I saw support for his point. I will post a little excerpt from Surah 4 the women:

15. If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way.
16. If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful.

As it is seen in the two initial verses concerning women there is the extremely hard task of bringing four witnesses that see the lewdness meaning that they are eye witnesses that actually see the sexual act taking place which is next to impossible. However if they testify they are to be confined to their houses until death or Allah make for them some other way.

In this instance if the two women were already married to the same man it would mean that they would just have to stay in the house until they passed on however if they had not yet married then they would have no prospect of marrying, in contrast to the men where they are to be punished immediately unless they repent and give up that way of life. On the surface it would seem to support the writer’s claims however this hadith puts the stamp of illegitimately of the practice.

'Abd al-Rahman, the son of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, reported from his father: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: "A man should not see the private parts of another man, and a woman should not see the private parts of another woman, and a man should not lie with another man under one covering, and a woman should not lie with another woman under one covering. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Menstruation (Kitab Al-Haid), Book 003, Number 0667)"

I hope that this squashes the issue for most people. I'm sure those who wish to continue the practice will find for themselves an excuse.
