In Islam the Minimum wives recommended is two?

I was talking with a brother who explained the verse in Sura Nisaa. Where Allah Commands to marry two, three or four in the case of being fair to orphans. He explained to me that two is the minimum. I had never looked at the verse this way. Ever.

He stated that it is the only verse in the Quran that commands marriage and that marriage to one is the last resort if you are unable to be fair. Of course my first thought was complete disbelief. No, well how could this be. Marriage is talked about several times in the Quran however this is the only verse commanding it. With a number?

The verse which is the nightmare of most sisters is this, everyone knows it.

YUSUFALI: If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

So using this logic the verse goes like this. Marry women of your choice Two or Three or Four. Where the Order from Allah is on the Man to take wives starting at two minimum. He didn't say get married and then you can marry up to four. No the number of marriage starts at two. This is where the logic of my brother begins. It ends with One being the Last Resort. So I pondered this and said Hmm. Ok the brother does have a valid point. The verse is a Command and the number that is started out with is Two. This is true. However there is also the issue of the orphans which is used as a criteria in the number of wives. However orphans are not a rule considered in marriage under normal circumstances at all. So the issue of the orphans rests squarely upon itself and the issue of marriage is a separate issue. No where else in the Quran is marriage ordered.

Everything about marriage is discussed. When to marry, who to marry, who not to marry, what to give as dowry, It is of utmost piety not to take back any dowry, etcetera. However it remains that the only command about marriage when marriage is ordered consists with the minimum number of two. Followed by the verse who states that you will never be able to do justice between your wives.

I AM NO SCHOLAR. I am only repeating this here out of reflection and my thought process in it. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR BULLETS in your thought process please defer to someone knowledgeable in these matters.

I think that if brothers took this to heart we would be doomed, but looking at things realistically polygyny makes a lot of sense. It explains many statements of the Prophet SAW. Such as marry young women, Have many children to outnumber the Kuffar. And so on. All of this wisdom is geared to realizing the time that we are in where Predator Drones comb the skies and kill off Muslims in droves. You would think that Muslims would be out there procreating like mad.

Well it is late and all of my thoughts aren't really together, but as I went over the compilation of marriage verses I realize that the goal of marriage in Islam is to purify the community and leave no one struggling in their nafs.

I'll leave this off here. If you plan on taking my post and running to your wife with it bring your gloves because it is going to be a fight.

Peace.

  1. So that would mean a man who marries only once is sinning? He has disobeyed the commandment of Allah. All men should start with 2. Yes marry 2 on the same day. If you start with one and marry another few years later, you have sinned for those years! You didn't start with the minimum; 2. Don't ever be caught with 1 wife. It is below the minimum requirement....

Makes sense? I don't think so.

  2. 1. I never said that this was the rule. This was only a reflection on something that I was told.

    2. It wouldn't make it a sin using this logic, just not up to code and as the verse says if you cannot do justice THEN only ONE.

    3. The permission to marry only one would negate sin all together coupled with the Prophet's advice.

    4. However the Quran is clear that marriage is not something to be played with. The girlfriend/boyfriend thing is out. Which supports eliminating the whole living off of love philosophy without responsibility. However if you cannot support a wife then you should not get married at all. Possibly primarily due to marriage is for producing children and guarding your Deen as the Prophet has explained. So if you can't afford kids then sidestep the stress of having them as this can adversely affect your Deen depending on how strong you are.

    5. There are examples in the Hadith where men married two women on the same day. I'm not saying that it is right but it is what it is.
